Allan and John – disability support

photo of Allan and John

As an NDIS Support Coordinator and NDIS participant himself, Allan enjoys helping people access services that will significantly improve their quality of life. He has first-hand experience of knowing the difference that great support and services can bring to a participant. Allan finds his work in the care and support sector incredibly rewarding and thinks other people with disability may feel the same.

Hi, my name is Allan, and I'm an NDIS Support Coordinator.
Part of doing this role as a Support Coordinator is that you need to have good organisational skills to be able to manage multiple clients at the same time.
Sometimes you might be dealing with clients who might be having a bad day.
Sometimes we have participants who might even be afraid to go outside, giving them the opportunities and the tools
for them to be able to go out.
Once you put a team around those people, they're able to achieve some wonderful things, just simply to be able to give somebody the confidence to be able to go out and enjoy their day.
Having a support worker take them out to the shops or coming into the home and helping them with anything around the home.
John, he's been a long-term client of mine, and I'm supporting him throughout the NDIS process.
The most important thing for John is to be able to have that connection and say, "Hey, you know, I've got a problem.
What do you think? Can this be funded?"
Hi, my name's John.
I'm a single parent with two boys, both with disabilities.
And I work a full-time job, which I've been in for the past 18 years of my life.
The support Allan gives us makes my life a lot easier.
As I said, I'm a single parent.
I work a full-time job.
Having two kids with disabilities, it's pretty tough.
Some days I can just give him a ring and just to get support on who to talk to just takes so much weight off my shoulders, knowing that I can give him a call for whatever.
If I can't do anything about it, he usually can.
I think that's another big thing is that once people know that people are out there to help them, it builds up that confidence to be able to go out.
It just gives them that trust.
It gives them that idea that somebody's gonna show up.
One thing that I really want to encourage is people with disabilities to have a go at working in the sector.
It is something that can be extremely rewarding, and people with disabilities have such a wealth of knowledge.
