Hanan, Shameran and Shaker – aged care

Hanan, Shameran and Shaker – aged care

Originally from Iraq, Hanan immigrated to Australia and started her journey to become an aged care worker. Hanan enjoys working with people from diverse backgrounds, and has developed a close relationship with Iraqi aged care couple Shameran and Shaker, through the rich conversation they have in their first language, Arabic.

HANAN:
Shaker has been a beekeeper for more than 20 years. The honey Shaker makes is organic, he plants the roses, and he knows what roses the bees like. He has a beautiful relationship with the bees, he’s not beekeeping just for the honey. He likes to take care of them, and that’s his favourite hobby.

My name is Hanan, I work in Aged Care. When I arrived in Australia in 2017, my sister was working in this field. And she shared her experience and her passion about this career which heartened me. It suits my personality and my love for helping and serving others, especially the elderly, who are more in need of our help and support.

Working with Shameran and Shaker delights me. Things we do together are shopping, we shop together, we converse, we go to doctor’s appointments. We sometimes go out together for a coffee or a cup of tea. Every time I provide my service to them, I feel happy to see them and converse with them because they’re very special.

SHAKER:
She is a blessed woman, a wonderful and well-mannered woman who gives more than what she takes.

SHAMERAN:
Honestly, we feel comfortable with her, we speak the same language, have the same traditions and rituals.

HANAN:
I encourage the refugees and the new arrivals in this country, to work in this field because older people are in need of help and support. Especially in a foreign country, many from our background need someone to help them, someone from the same culture.

I surely learnt a lot in this work. I learnt from their life experiences, I learnt how to be patient and stronger in my own life. Of course, the most important thing I learnt is that life is short. We will not live forever, so we should enjoy little things, love others, always have a generous and loving heart. I learnt how to be more giving!
