Jason and Gordon - veterans' care

Jason and Gordon

Gordon joined the care and support sector from the IT industry, and now helps veterans like Jason, providing support with meal prep, cleaning and yard services. Having a support worker like Gordon has made Jason feel more relaxed and supported with everyday tasks, and together the two have formed a genuine mateship.

Gordan: Being able to support veterans in general, I think is very rewarding. You are truly making a difference in their lives, providing services that we take for granted. My name's Gordon, I'm the client manager at our home services business. So I'd been in the IT industry for around 20 years. And I was looking for something a bit more rewarding. My dad and brother were both army veterans. So it felt like a pretty easy transition. I didn't know anything about home services when I came across, but I knew how to look after customers. So, I learned by doing, and back that up with an interest in wanting to help people. When I started providing support to Jason end of last year, he just needed a hand with a few things around the house. He's suffering from a few issues. So we do a bit of meal prep for him, some cleaning, yard services.

Jason: My name's Jason, and this is my assistance dog, Buddha. Having support workers that understand my needs and are prepared to help out as much as need be, that makes me feel relaxed, more content, knowing that things are happening that need to be done. that I'm not capable of doing myself, being able to have a cook, have a cleaner come in and do those things, these sort of things mean that I'm not putting myself in pain and I'm not creating more unnecessary undue stress.

Gordon: We get along pretty easily, and it certainly makes it easier when you can have a good chat to the people you're looking after.

Jason: I believe I've gained a good mateship with him through this because of his ability to be able to just see what my needs are and talk to me as a one-on-one.

Gordon: I think it's helped me become a more patient person, more understanding. You go home feeling like you have made a difference. And when you get that positive feedback from a veteran that, you know, everything went well with their service, it really does make a difference and you feel pretty satisfied.
